Step By Step Guide To Buying Gas Logs

Gas log installation step by step purchasing guide

Step 1 – Choose Your Venting Option

If you are buying gas logs for your existing fireplace, check it to see which venting system you have in place. If you are buying gas logs for a new fireplace, consider the differences between vented and vent-free gas logs

Vented Gas Logs

  • Most realistic and natural-looking flame
  • Must be installed in a fully functioning wood-burning fireplace.
  • Radiant heat delivers warmth into the room, similar to burning wood.
  • Produces some soot when the flame touches the log.

Vent-Free Gas Logs

  • Delivers more heat inside your home.
  • Must be installed in a fireplace approved for a vent-free log set.
  • Installation is subject to state and local codes. Some areas do not allow vent-free.

Step 2 – Determine The Size Of Your Logs

This simple measuring process will help you choose the size you need.

  1. Measure the front width of your fireplace.
  2. Measure the width at the back of your fireplace.
  3. Measure the depth from the front to the back of your fireplace.
  4. Measure the height from the top to the bottom of the front of your fireplace.
  5. Measure the height from the top to the bottom of the back of your fireplace.

Step 3 – Choose How To Control The Gas Logs

Match Light

This option is for natural gas only. There is no pilot, only the logs and the burner. Your fire is lighted by placing a match or lighter near the burner, then turning on the gas with your key valve. You control your flame height by using your key valve, which is normally located outside the fireplace either in the wall or floor.

Manual Safety Pilot

This system has a safety pilot that is manually lighted and stays lit all the time. Also called a standing pilot, it is similar to a pilot found in a water heater. You can turn the burner on and off manually by reaching inside your fireplace and turning the control knob. You cannot operate this type of system with remote control, but you can upgrade later.

Remote Control

Remote control systems include a remote pilot valve assembly. Depending on the remote option you select, you will have the ability to control certain functions of the log set from a remote control. Remote-controlled options include basic on/off control, as well as variable flame control height.

Step 4 – Choose Natural Or Propane Gas

You may already have a gas line installed in your fireplace, in which case the gas you burn will be decided. If there isn’t a gas line, then you will need to decide what fuel type you would like to use.

Had the Mad Hatter clean out our dyer vent today. They were on time! The technician, Josh & Dennis were very professional and knowledgeable about doing the job correctly in a timely manner and answering my questions too. They were very considerate of making sure they did not bring in or leave any dryers lint anywhere. They lay down a mat at the inside of it home and made sure they wore shoe covers when entering the home. I will certainly be using them again. Also, I would recommend The Mad Hatter to my family, friends, neighbors any anyone else needing their services.

I am 150% satisfied with the work done by The Mad Hatter to restore my fireplace & chimney to working condition. The initial estimate and restoration work were done by Juan Carlos and his team (Juan Carlos Jr, Oscar and Tino). The estimate accurately reflected the time and effort needed to fix the numerous problems due to almost 50 years of use, neglect and sub-standard original construction that did not meet the fire code. From day one, the crew was extremely careful not to create a mess in my house by wearing plastic booties, laying carpet runners & blankets, covering all the furniture with plastic and erecting a temporary plastic enclosure around the fireplace to contain the dust & debris. An exhaust fan ducted out a window minimized any dust getting into the house. They removed all the damaged fire bricks in the fire box, the rusted-out damper, and the deteriorated terra cotta flue. Then, they replaced the fire brick in the firebox, parged the smoke box, and installed a new stainless-steel flue. On the exterior, they removed & replaced all the missing/deteriorated brick & mortar on the chimney chase, raised the height of the chimney chase to meet the fire code 10-2 requirement, fixed the old flashing, installed a top damper and custom-built hip cap. The entire chimney chase was sprayed with a sealant. What warrants the extra 50% was all the extra things done over and above the contracted work to ensure I was completely satisfied like providing daily status updates with photos, installing a new gas log starter and fire grate, adding hardy plank between the studs in the attic adjacent to the chimney chase to replace gypsum siding deteriorated by water leaking around the old chimney flashing, adding metal caps to the shoulders of the chimney chase to repel water, thoroughly raking and sweeping the yard of brick debris, adding new mulch to the flower bed at the base of the chimney, and even screwing a piece of metal over a hole that a squirrel had chewed into my attic at the corner of the eave that I could not reach with my extension ladder. Thank you for a superb job done by an extremely professional and courteous crew. I highly recommend them for any fireplace/chimney inspection and/or repair needed.
